Chung Shan Medical University Hospital is a top medical center that integrates clinical practice, teaching, and research. It has always adhered to the principle of "treating people, treating diseases, and treating hearts", striving to provide the public with the latest technology and high-quality medical services. Therefore, in July 2015, the "Da Vinci Minimally Invasive Surgery Center" was established, dedicating itself entirely to the field of Da Vinci robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery systems.

This center covers seven specialty departments including general surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, otolaryngology, colorectal surgery, cardiac surgery, and thoracic surgery. Within five and seven years, it achieved milestones of completing 1,000 and 2,000 Da Vinci surgeries respectively.

The Department of General Surgery has established an exclusive medical team composed of attending physicians, specialized nurses, surgical nurses, and case managers. They have constructed a comprehensive "medical care, nursing, health education" triangle model. By integrating the different functions provided by the three roles of physicians, nurses, and case managers, patients can receive the most comprehensive medical care from their initial consultation to their return home after surgery.

Medical
The Da Vinci Minimally Invasive Surgery Center is committed to developing high-quality minimally invasive medical services in seven major specialties. Surgeons and nurses undergo professional training in minimally invasive surgery and continuously enhance their skills through surgical observation and participation in surgical discussions. Among these specialties, the General Surgery Department has established an exclusive team dedicated to the development of minimally invasive surgeries such as Da Vinci surgery and laparoscopic surgery in the digestive system (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach) and thyroid areas. They actively promote the application of single-incision techniques in minimally invasive surgery.

To continuously improve their techniques and keep abreast of trends, the center actively organizes domestic and international symposiums and clinical visits, facilitating exchanges with surgical experts from various fields both domestically and abroad to enhance surgical skills and medical quality. Through these efforts, they have achieved unique surgical milestones such as Single Port Surgery for the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract, becoming pioneers in the development of single-port laparoscopy and single-port robotic surgery in the country. From 2016 to 2023, they consistently ranked first in the country for Da Vinci surgery volume in general surgery.

Furthermore, through their collective efforts, the Da Vinci team obtained world renowned corporations-INTUITIVE certification in 2020, becoming the first General Surgery Da Vinci Surgery Observation Center in the country. In 2021, they received recognition with the Symbol of National Quality certification (SNQ) for "Single-Incision Minimally Invasive Surgery." In 2023, they further achieved outstanding results by obtaining the National Healthcare Quality Award (NHQA) for " Minimally Invasive Surgery."

Care and Education
In order to provide comprehensive care and support for patients' physical, mental, and emotional well-being, since December 2015, we have been organizing various patient support groups such as the Pancreatic Cancer Surgery Support Group, Gastric Cancer Surgery Support Group, Liver Cancer Surgery Support Group, Biliary Tract Cancer Surgery Support Group, Thyroid Surgery Support Group, and Metabolic Disease Surgery Support Group. These groups hold regular meetings at least once a year, during which patients are provided with new information on various topics such as surgical treatment, internal medicine treatment, nutrition support, and traditional Chinese medicine care. The goal is to enhance patients' and their families' abilities in caregiving, improve doctor-patient communication and interaction, and provide channels for mutual support and emotional relief through the participation of patients and their families in sharing their preoperative and postoperative experiences. This helps to enhance the quality of medical care. Additionally, in this era of information, the Da Vinci Center also provides a channel for people to receive information and consultations by creating a Facebook fan page and website.

Training development
The Da Vinci Minimally Invasive Surgery Center takes teaching as its responsibility and strives to achieve the development of medical education concepts, promote knowledge in the field of medical surgery, and cultivate talents in the surgical field. It diligently engages in the following activities:

1. Surgical Training and Observation
Through collaboration with peer hospitals, we provide training modules for surgical training and observation for physicians and scholars from both domestic and international backgrounds. From 2016 to 2023, surgeons who underwent training or observation at our institution came not only from our country but also from Italy, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, Greece, Poland, India, the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, the United States, and China, totaling 485 individuals.

2. Minimally Invasive Surgery Experience Camp

From traditional open surgery and minimally invasive endoscopy to the recent advancements in Robotic surgery, surgical techniques have continuously evolved. Therefore, the Da Vinci Minimally Invasive Surgery Center initiated the Minimally Invasive Surgery Experience Camp for university students in 2016. The following year, they expanded to organize the "High School Minimally Invasive Surgery Experience Camp." Through these camps, the aim is to make minimally invasive surgery more accessible to participating students.

During the camps, students are given ample time to experience three different surgical methods, ranging from basic suturing techniques to advanced laparoscopic instruments and Da Vinci robotic arm operations. By providing hands-on experience in these various surgical techniques, students can gain a closer understanding of the field of surgery. This allows them to explore whether they have an inclination towards pursuing a career in surgery at an earlier stage, thereby realizing the goals of advancing medical education concepts, promoting knowledge in the field of medical surgery, and cultivating talents in the surgical field. By 2023, a total of 410 students had participated in these camps.

Future
"Medicine" is a field that evolves with the times and continuously innovates. The Da Vinci Minimally Invasive Surgery Center will adhere to the direction set by our institution's operation goals, continuously improving the skills and medical quality of Da Vinci minimally invasive surgery at our institution. Our aim is to gradually progress towards becoming an internationally recognized center for minimally invasive surgery training.
